A design collective
In September 2014 we were selected to produce an exclusive collection for the National Trust of Scotland. The design collective comprised of 9 independent makers. From textiles to silver work, pottery and wood, the group was varied and full of ideas. We gathered together at the NTS headquarters in Edinburgh to take inspiration from the trusts archives.
Inspiration
To create this unique range, we focused on key concepts at the heart of the National Trust. We found ourselves drawn to themes directly relating to us, nature, wildlife and built heritage. Once we had the concepts, the ideas began to flow. I was inspired by memories of growing up in the Scottish Borders with hills, trees, historic buildings and animals on the doorstep. Our hats are a requirement within the realms of outdoor leisure so it was fitting to marry these ideas with our products.
The range
Our range was designed using a mix of natural tones from the hills to the sea which was thrown sideways with vibrant splashes of colour. We used rust and forest green in the 3 sisters mountain design then blue and burgundy to make our pine knot pattern. We also included two children’s designs: a black and bright green bat hat and a navy and mauve castle and monument silhouette hat.
